Add More Solar Panels or Add a Battery?

Choose the upgrade that solves your actual problem: insufficient daytime generation, wasted midday energy, high evening imports or inadequate outage backup.

Research benchmark, not a fixed quote

Recent South African forum research discussed roughly R27,000 for a panel expansion and roughly R33,000 for a battery addition. Equipment, capacity, roof work, cabling, protection, labour and compliance can change both totals substantially. Compare itemised quotes for the same scope.

When more panels make sense

Ask the designer for an updated string calculation. Panel wattage alone is not enough: open-circuit voltage at low temperature, operating current, orientation and shading all matter.

When another battery makes sense

Do not mix batteries casually.

Different models, capacities, firmware versions, ages or states of health may not be approved to operate in one bank. Obtain written confirmation from the battery or inverter supplier and ensure BMS communication, cables, fusing and settings are correct.

Compare the numbers properly

Do not compare only the purchase price. Ask each installer to show:

  1. Expected annual generation added for the panel option, including orientation and shading assumptions.
  2. Usable storage added for the battery option, after depth-of-discharge limits and conversion losses.
  3. Self-consumption impact: how much grid electricity the upgrade is expected to avoid.
  4. Backup runtime at a stated continuous load, not a vague promise of “all night”.
  5. Total installed cost, including protection, mounting, cabling, labour, updated documentation and municipal requirements.

A battery provides resilience and time-shifting, but it does not create energy. Panels create energy, but they do not automatically provide backup. Many homes ultimately need both; the sequence should follow measured consumption data.

Compatibility checks before paying a deposit

A simple decision checklist

  1. Download at least 30 days of inverter data, including PV production, grid imports, exports and battery state of charge.
  2. Identify the hours and loads causing the shortfall.
  3. Ask for two itemised options based on the same measured data.
  4. Compare expected savings, backup benefit and total installed cost.
