The 400-Day Streak — What Changed?
South Africa passed the one-year mark without load-shedding on 15 May 2026 — a milestone that would have seemed impossible in 2023. The improvement is real and structural:
- Unplanned outages down — Eskom's unplanned capacity loss factor (UCLF) dropped significantly from the 30%+ levels of 2023. More units are staying online for longer.
- Maintenance catching up — Years of deferred maintenance are finally being addressed, though the backlog is still enormous.

Why the Rumours Keep Coming
Despite the stable grid, social media regularly erupts with claims that Stage 6 is back. Why?
- Load reduction ≠ load-shedding — Eskom implements "load reduction" in areas with high non-payment or illegal connections. These are targeted, localised outages — not national load-shedding. But to residents affected, it feels the same. Gauteng and KZN have ongoing load reduction programmes that cause confusion. Eskom plans to remove 624 feeders from load reduction by October 2026.
- Rumour spreads faster than fact — A single Reddit post claiming "Stage 6 is back" can trend within hours. In early July 2026, such posts appeared — but no official source confirmed them. Eskom never implemented Stage 6.
- The psychological scar — After years of daily power cuts, South Africans are primed to believe the worst. Any grid wobble triggers panic. This is entirely rational — but it means rumours spread without verification.
Before believing any social media claim, check: 1) Eskom's official portal — if it says "not load-shedding," the rumours are false. 2) The EskomSePush app — it pushes real-time stage changes. 3) SAnews.gov.za — official government news source. If none of these confirm it, it's not happening.
Could Load-Shedding Really Return?
Yes — and anyone telling you it can't is selling something. The underlying vulnerabilities haven't disappeared:
- Ageing coal fleet — Most of Eskom's power stations are decades old. A single catastrophic failure at a major station could trigger load-shedding within hours, as happened briefly in February 2025.
- Diesel budget constraints — The open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) that bridge supply gaps burn diesel — an expensive, budget-limited resource. When the diesel budget runs dry, so does the backup.
- Winter demand peaks — July is peak winter. Heating loads push the grid to its annual maximum. If unplanned outages spike during peak demand, the buffer shrinks fast.
- Structural unbundling risk — Eskom's unbundling into separate generation, transmission, and distribution entities is underway. Some analysts warn this transition could create operational instability.
The realistic view: load-shedding is dormant, not dead. The grid is in the best shape it's been in years — but it's still one bad week away from trouble.
